Flow Rotameters and Vane Hardware: Simple Mechanical Vertical Indicators for Purge Lines

Where Purge Lines Use These Indicators

Purge lines show up in many plants. They keep differential pressure transmitter impulse lines clean. They protect analyzer sample systems from condensation. They provide seal flush flows to pumps and agitators. A small continuous flow of nitrogen, instrument air, water, or glycol keeps the process side from blocking or overheating.

Here is the thing. The flow in these lines is often too small for a standard paddle wheel or electromagnetic flow meter. A simple mechanical rotameter or vane indicator still works well in this range. Maintenance teams can see the ball or vane at a glance. There is no signal to configure and no electrical loop to troubleshoot.

Rotameter Construction and Reading

A rotameter uses a vertical tapered tube and a float. The float moves up as flow increases. The reading point is usually the top edge of the float or the widest part of a ball float. Silver Instruments rotameters for purge lines commonly come with a 150 mm or 300 mm scale length. Tube materials include borosilicate glass for general service and acrylic for lower pressure air and water lines. Metal tube designs with 316 stainless steel bodies are used when the purge media is hot or when the tube must handle mechanical impact.

Standard connections for purge rotameters start at 1/8 inch NPT and go up to DN25. For most gas purge panels, a 1/4 inch NPT connection with a 0.5 to 5 L/min air range is the most common size we quote. For liquid seal flush lines, a 1/2 inch NPT body with a 5 to 50 L/h water range is typical. Accuracy for these mechanical units is around plus or minus 4 percent of full scale. Repeatability is about plus or minus 0.5 percent. That is enough for purge applications where the goal is to confirm a stable small flow rather than measure batch totals.

Vane Hardware for Visual Flow Confirmation

Vane flow indicators work on a different principle. Flow pushes a swinging vane against a spring. The vane position shows the relative flow rate through a vertical sight window. These units suit higher liquid purge flows, cooling water return lines, and systems with slightly dirty media. Because there is no small annular gap around a float, vane indicators clog less. They usually come in 1 inch, 2 inch, and sometimes 3 inch NPT or flanged connections. Typical accuracy is lower than a rotameter, often plus or minus 5 percent of full scale, but the job is usually just to see that flow exists and is stable.

Silver Instruments vane hardware can include a magnetic indicator flag for better visibility from a distance. The body material can be bronze, 316 stainless steel, or PVC. For seawater cooling lines in desalination plants or marine service, we often quote 316 stainless steel with EPDM seals. For chemical dosing skids, PVC or PTFE lined bodies with Kalrez seals are a safer choice.

Pressure, Temperature, and Material Selection

Most standard glass tube rotameters are rated for 10 bar at 20 degrees Celsius. Some 316 stainless steel metal tube purge meters can handle 16 bar and up to 150 degrees Celsius with the right float and seal set. Always check the actual operating pressure and temperature. In our experience, customers in the Middle East often ask for a 16 bar rating on gas purge panels because instrument air headers run at 7 to 10 bar. Customers in Southeast Asia water plants often only need 4 to 6 bar but want UPVC or 316 stainless steel to avoid corrosion from coastal air
