Flow Meter Types & Flow Transmitter Types: Complete Breakdown of Industrial Sensing Categories

Electromagnetic Flow Meter Types

Electromagnetic flow meters work for conductive liquids. Water, wastewater, acid, caustic, slurry, and pulp are typical. The liquid needs a minimum conductivity of 5 µS/cm. Coriolis Mass Flow Meter Types

Coriolis mass flow meters measure mass flow directly. They also measure density and temperature. This type works for oils, syrups, chemicals, liquefied gas, molasses, and dairy products. Ultrasonic Flow Meter Types

Ultrasonic flow meters come in clamp-on and inline versions. The clamp-on type suits large pipes, temporary flow surveys, and lines that cannot be shut down. It is common in HVAC chilled water, seawater, fire water, and river water pumping. A contractor in the Philippines used a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter on a DN600 cooling water line. Installation took one afternoon. The meter sent 4-20 mA and RS485 data to a building management system.

Inline ultrasonic meters give better accuracy for clean liquids. Use them for custody transfer, district heating, and chemical transfer. The meter has no moving parts and low pressure drop. For wastewater with high solids, check the signal quality first.

Vortex Flow Meter Types

Vortex flow meters work for steam, compressed air, hot gas, and some clean liquids. They need a Reynolds number above 10,000. Vibration can disturb the signal.
